A frame profile describes the shape and contour of a frame, particularly when viewed from the side. It determines whether the frame has a flat surface, a sloping edge, a curved shape or a more decorative design.
Although two frames may have a similar width and colour, their profiles can create quite different effects.
A flat profile can feel clean and contemporary, while a curved or ornate profile may introduce softness or a more traditional character. A sloping profile can create a sense of movement and draw the eye towards the artwork.
Choosing a profile is about more than appearance alone. Its shape, depth and proportions all influence how the finished frame relates to the artwork.
